Easy Street Records Label Profile
Established in March, 1983, it didn't take very long for Easy Street to make its presence known around the world. "Go Deh Yaka" by Monyaka & Hot Streak's "Body Work" became international pop hits in the summer of '83; & later that year, "Body Work" (produced by "Jellybean" Benitez) appeared on the soundtrack to the movie "Breakin'" which sold over 2 million copies. Another trend setting release in '83 was "Share The Night" performed by World Premiere, a heavily R&B influenced melodic dance floor classic.
These initial successes were followed in 1984 by Serious Intention's club classic, "You Don't Know", produced by Paul Simpson & Jocelyn Brown's "Pickin' Up Promises" , and Bobby "Boris" Pickett's "Monster Rap", an updated version of the classic "Monster Mash". Beginning in 1985, Easy Street released several movie soundtrack albums including "The Protector", ( Jackie Chan's 1st American hit), "Code of Silence", starring Chuck Norris and "That Was Then, This is Now" featuring Emilio Estevez and Craig Sheffer. The Easy Street sound began to take shape with releases in 1986 from Shot/"Main Thing" (also recorded by Swedish pop star Robyn), Paul Simpson's "Treat Her Sweeter" & culminating with "Ma Foom Bey" by Cultural Vibe (Tony Humphries & Winston Jones) which arguably launched the era of "House" music. Collaborating with talented producers and artists, the Easy Street sound became synonymous with great songs & powerful vocals, a formula that the label still follows today.
In the mid 80's, productions by Blaze & Smack Music helped to create a distinct New Jersey House sound. In Sync's, "Sometimes Love" (Blaze & David Morales mixes) & Adeva's "In & Out of My Life" & "Respect" became instant club hits, with the latter achieving platinum sales on Adeva's Chrysalis album! Towards the end of the decade, the label teamed up with Todd Terry, resulting in 2 important club hits by Hardhouse, "Check This Out" & Voices In My House".
In the 90's, producer/remixer's Joey Negro/Dave Lee, Blaze, Roger S, Deep Dish, Paramour, Hani, Full Intention, Knee Deep Bros, Benji Candelario and others all took a hand at creating new sounds & re-working the classics for Easy Street. House jams by Extortion, Cassio, Alexander Hope, Keisha Jenkins, Kathy Brown & especially De' Lacy's multi platinum single, "Hideaway", all left their imprint on the dance floor & at radio. The decade ended with ATFC's/Onephatdeeva's interpretation of "In & Out Of My Life", a mammoth UK pop & club hit.
The new millennium introduced our fans in 2002 to "Shelter Me", written & performed by Asaph Womack, who combined his artistry with the multi-talented Chris Herbert, one of the original members of Blaze, This gospel flavored anthem mixed by Dennis Ferrer, is a tribute to one of house music's most revered venues & features a deeply soulful vocal along with some incredible trumpet solos. Other releases have included projects with Lenny Fontana, Moses McClean Productions (Mitch "Mad" Moses & Vince McClean), Black Masses Orchestra (UK), The Rhythm Slaves & Kid Massive. The Easy Street/Blaze connection continued with a 2 CD set aptly entitled "Celebration - A Soulful House Journey", selected and mixed by Blaze. Other collaborations included De' Lacy and Joeski ("Beautiful Day"), Afrikali/Joeski & DJ Buck ("Out of the Jungle 2004"), Cultural Vibe/DJ Romain (Ma Foom Bey") and the UK's Robert de Fresnes and Scott Walker producing De' Lacy's "Funky With You". In July 2005, the renowned hip hop superstar, Missy Elliott , released "Lose Control", containing an excerpted sample from Hot Streak's/ "Body Work, that went on to become a worldwide radio & video hit, earning her a Grammy and an MTV video award. To great acclaim, Missy performed "Lose Control" during the half time show at the 2015 Super Bowl along with the superstar pop artist, Katy Perry. The label's activities outside of the U.S. have continued to expand in recent years. An affiliation with the U.K's Demon Music Group and relationships with the Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Ministry of Sound have ensured that the Easy Street catalog will continue to receive the widest possible distribution throughout Europe and the rest of the World. Easy Street's totally new web site was launched in April, 2016 and now features the label's complete catalogue in both MP3 & M4a digital formats.
