DE’ LACY may have achieved worldwide recognition from the major hit “HIDEAWAYâ€, released on deConstruction in August 1995, but there is actually more than a single hit story to it.
DE’ LACY (the act) emerged from a split in 1990 in the group SPECTRUM, whose other members included CE CE ROGERS on keyboard and RICO TYLER, the songwriter/keyboard player on ADEVA’S first album.
DE’ LACY was formed with old friends DE LACY DAVIS, percussionist-songwriter (trained at the Performing Arts School in Newark, NJ), GARY GRIFFIN, bassist, keyboardist, songwriter (trained at Boston’s Berklee College of Music), GLEN BRANCH, drummer, singer and RAINIE LASSITER, lead singer/songwriter. They continued to develop their career in music, also playing as individual musicians on tours with CE CE ROGERS, BLAZE, ADEVA and SYBIL and on albums for CE CE ROGERS, BLAZE, VERNELL FOSTER and HUNTER HAYES. Other production work for Rainie includes several vocal projects with STEVE WASHINGTON from SLAVE. Nevertheless, the four members of DE’ LACY kept meeting on a regular basis to write and develop new songs, which through a combination of partnership, friendship and local performances, led to a production deal with BLAZE that resulted in the production of “HIDEAWAYâ€. The recording was immediately signed to Easy Street Records in New York and eventually was licensed to deConstruction in August 1995, where it achieved amazing success, rising to the top of the charts in the UK (Top of The Pops appearance), Europe and many other countries.
DE’ LACY and BLAZE have continued working together since then and “That Look†was picked by the team to be the 2nd single, which was released in September 1996 and charted in the UK at #10 (Top of the Pops appearance).
“All I Need Is Love†was released in Italy in January, 1998 & went top 10 on the Italian Pop charts! The single was released in Holland in June, 1998 and will debut in Germany in September. “Moreâ€, with remixes by Paramour & Superbird has been chosen as the next single.
All four members continue to work at their “other†jobs - Rainie as a nurse; DeLacy and Gary as police officers and Glen as a computer technician. DeLacy is also a prominent social and community leader working with a self help coalition called “Stop The War On Youthâ€, which involves NAUGHTY BY NATURE, LORDS OF THE UNDERGROUND and ZULU NATION. In addition, he is the President of the National Black Police Association.
